ALL ABOUT KALGOORLIE
- Kalgoorlie Boulder is 595 km east-northeast of Perth through the Great Eastern Highway, 360 meters above sea-level.
- Kalgoorlie comes from the Wangkathaa Aboriginal word βkarlkurlah,” meaning ‘silky pear.’ (A plant that is very common in the area). Boulder was from the Great Boulder Mine.
- Kalgoorlie Boulder is home to the world’s largest open-pit gold mine.
- Today Kalgoorlie Boulder is a living heritage center as well as a modern city with over 30,000 residents.
HISTORY OF KALGOORLIE
- Arthur Bayley discovered gold near Coolgardie, bringing prospectors to the area.
- Paddy Hannan, Tom Flanagan, and Daniel Shea discovered alluvial gold nuggets near Mount Charlotte in 1893. It was an accidental discovery when one of their horses lost a shoe, forcing them to camp near where they discovered the gold.
- On June 17, 1893, Paddy Hannan registered his claim at Coolgardie. It brought 700 men to prospect the area. By the end of June, there were over 1000.
- Hannan’s Find would become the biggest gold rush, and is also known as the richest goldfield in the world.
- The South Australian syndicate discovered the famed Golden Mile near Boulder, south of Kalgoorlie.
- Canadian miner Larry Cammilleri discovered the lode matter, which made the Golden Mile famous in 1894. The lode was made up of ironstone, quartz, greenstone, diorite, and porphyry, which contained gold. (lode β meaning a vein of metal ore in the earth.)
- The first battery was established on April 10, 1894, where 2,008 tons of ore from the Great Boulder Mine yielded 15,000 ounces of gold.
- Kalgoorlie Boulder got its first post office in 1894, and in 1895 it got its first daily newspaper. In 1896 the railway reached the town of Kalgoorlie.
- In 1898 the population of the town was 2,018 residents.
- By 1901 the population of Kalgoorlie was 4,793, which would increase to 6,709 by 1903.
- Kalgoorlie Boulder was a booming town with 93 hotels, eight breweries, with a population of 30 000,people by the time it was 1902.
- In 1902 the Kalgoorlie Boulder School of Mines was founded, set up in Coolgardie, and later moving to Kalgoorlie in 1903.
- Also during 1903 the CY O’Connor’s pipeline reached the town bringing fresh water from Mundaring Weir.
- Boulder and Kalgoorlie had electricity by 1910, and a tramline was running up Hannan Street, with more than 25 brothels operating in Hay Street.
- There are still many mines operating in the goldfields district, half of them are gold mines, including the massive Super Pit. There are mines for nickel, chrysoprase, copper, granite, lime, salt, sand, and silver.
- The discovery of nickel ore at Kambalda in 1966 lead it to become a significant mineral product of the region.

- The Kalgoorlie Boulder Walking Tour is a walk you can take when you purchase a souvenir map and information booklet while hiring a headset that offers detailed descriptions covering most of the buildings in Hannan street and the Questa Casa bordello.
- The Statue of Paddy Hannan is a statue of the man credited for discovering the Hannan Field at Kalgoorlie.
- Kalgoorlie Boulder Town Hall is a historical building built in 1908.
- The York Hotel was constructed in 1900, completed in 1901, and opened on February 23, 1901.
- The Palace Hotel was built in 1897 and was recognized as the most luxurious hotel outside of Perth. It was the first hotel in town to get electricity as well as its own water processing plant. Then the O’Connor’s pipeline arrived in 1903.
- The Kalgoorlie Boulder Miner and Old Western Argus was the first three-story building in town, where the first daily newspaper was published.
- The WA Museum, Kalgoorlie-Boulder is the ideal place to discover the history of Eastern Goldfields.
- The British Arms Hotel is known as the narrowest hotel in the Southern Hemisphere.
- The Questa Casa (The Famous Brothel), also known as ‘The Pink House,’ is the only remaining brothel from a time when there were over 30 brothels.
- Hammond Park is known to be a lush green oasis in the middle of the outback.
- Karlkurla Bushland Park is 200 hectares of bushland park with 4 km of walking tracks.
- Super Pit Lookout is a lookout, overlooking a hole in the ground, originally known as the Golden Mile.
- The Loopline Railway & Museum is a historic loopline train, railway museum and railway station.
- The Boulder Town Hall features a prominent clock tower and theatre.
- The Boulder Pioneer Cemetery has history engraved in its headstones dating back to the 1900s.
