Defining Websites and Their Components
- Websites are made up of interlinked web pages.
- Web pages are hypertext documents on the World Wide Web. These can be displayed using web browsers. Some of the most widely known web browsers of our time are Google Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari.
- The collection of web pages that belong to a website share a single domain name and can be accessed by the public online.
- The hosts of these websites found on the world wide web are called web servers.
- Search engines help users find websites that suit their needs. Users can access search engines using web browsers.
- When a person visits a website, the user will be greeted by the homepage or the main page of the site.
- The header is found at the top of the web page. It commonly shows the brand logo or any promotional material of the website. Users constantly see this component even if they go through other pages of the site.
- The navigation bar or the main menu is usually found inside the header or just below it. This menu allows users to navigate through the website, as it provides links to the different pages.
- Some larger sites use a βdrop down mega menuβ that includes several links organized into different groups or categories.
- The hero image or future image is used to catch userβs attention upon visiting a website. This large image sits at the top of the homepage and includes a headline or Call To Action texts (tells users what to do and how to do it). One example of CTA is βBuy Now!β Call To Action texts are considered one of the most important parts of a website.
- A slider is often used to display several images in one spot. The images can be viewed one at a time, sliding from left to right or vice versa. Sliders can be found anywhere in the website.
- The website content provides the users information they are looking for from the website. It does not just refer to the text, but it also refers to other elements that may communicate the siteβs message – images, videos, music, etc.
- The sidebar is used to display advertisements and other links that might be related to the websiteβs content.
- The footer is also present in every page. It often contains contact information, policies, and other important links.
Common Types of Websites
- Blogs are often created and managed by an individual or a small group. The content is often written in an informal or conversational style and can be about anything β travel, fashion, food, lifestyle, etc. Most people online strive to make money out of blogging.
- Most businesses own a website to make their products or services available online. These are called corporate websites. Other times, businesses or brands use s website to simply provide information to their customers.
- E-commerce is one of the most popular website types in our current times. Its main focus is to provide users an online platform where they can buy and sell products. Unlike physical stores, these e-commerce sites can be accessed 24/7 and are just a click away.
- News or magazine sites keeps users updated on current events or trends.
- Portfolios display a particular personβs work online. This helps individuals showcase their talents and skills to other people, especially to potential clients, employers, or customers.
- Entertainment websites with TV or video streaming services are also popular nowadays. Subscribers have access to several TV shows and movies anytime, anywhere.
- Educational websites offer educational content to their users. These sites display lessons on different subject matters, which are often paired with fun games, quizzes, and more.
- It is good to have a solid plan before creating your website. Think about the goal and purpose of your website. Why are you building it?
- Think about what type of website you want to create.
- Think about the tone of your website content. Is it formal or informal?
- For the visual design of your website, it is better to keep it minimal so that it loads quickly. Stick with the same style and color scheme throughout the website to keep it looking clean. The look should be consistent.
- You need to make sure that your design makes it easy for users to navigate through your website (i.e., texts and icons are clear and easy to understand).
- Sketch the different pages on paper before going into Google Sites.
Using Google Sites
- Google sites make it easy for anyone to create websites without having to code. All you need to do is click, drag, and drop elements to build and edit your site. You need a Google account to start using this platform.
- Once you have your Google account, go to https://sites.google.com/ to sign in.
- If you want to start with a blank project, click the first box.
- Click the template gallery to choose a template.
- Editing page. As the designer, you can click different elements and add them to your workspace to build your website.
- You can edit text and other properties in the workspace.
- Click the Pages tab to view the pages you currently have. Click the + button to add a new page.
- Click the Themes tab to view the different themes/templates available. To use a specific theme/template, just click on it.
- The toolbar allows users to do several actions: undo or redo a certain action, show a preview of the site, copy the link of the published site, share projects with others, and customize navigation settings.
- Edit the document title and enter your website name.
