INTRODUCTION
- Bahrain is officially known as the Kingdom of Bahrain, and it is an island nation consisting of a small archipelago that is made up of Bahrain Island and some other smaller islands.
- Bahrain is located between the Qatar peninsula and the northeastern coast of Saudi Arabia.
- Bahrain is considered to be the third-smallest nation in Asia.
- The largest city, which is also the capital city, is Manama, which is located on the northeastern tip of Bahrain Island.
- Bahrain is known for its green groves of date plants, for its pearl fisheries or pearling, and for being widely believed as the site of the ancient kingdom of Dilmun.
BRIEF HISTORY
- The archipelago was mentioned by several Persian, Greek, and Roman geographers and historians, and it is believed to be the seat of the ancient Dilmun.
- Dilmun, or Telmun, was a prosperous trading center that linked Sumer with the Indus Valley.
- From 1521 to 1602, the archipelago was ruled by the Portuguese and the Persians from 1602 to 1783.
- Since 1783, the archipelago has been under the rule of the Khalīfah family.
- In August 1971, ʿIsā ibn Sulmān Āl Khalīfah proclaimed the independence of Bahrain after signing a treaty of friendship with the United Kingdom.
- Since then, Bahrain has been a member of the United Nations and of the Arab League.
THE FLAG
- The national flag of Bahrain has a white part on the left side and a red part on the right side, separated by five connected triangles.
- The triangles stand for the five pillars of Islam: Shada, Salat, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj.
GEOGRAPHY
- Bahrain is a flat and arid archipelago in the Persian Gulf.
- Bahrain’s islands consist of the Bahrain Island, the Hawar Islands, Muharraq Island, Umm an Nasan, Sitra, and other smaller islands.
- Bahrain’s climate ranges from mild winters to very hot and humid summers.
- During the months of June and July, Bahrain experiences reduced visibility due to the shamal wind.
BIODIVERSITY
- Date palms, citrus trees, and alfalfa are mainly cultivated in the northern and western areas of the main island.
- Bahrain is also close to a 9.75-meter tree that is over 400 years old, the Tree of Life.
- The Tree of Life is located on a hill in a barren area of the Arabian Desert, which is just about 2 kilometers away from the highest point of Bahrain, the Jebel Dukhan.
- The sand gazelle is the largest land mammal that can be found in Bahrain.
- Other mammals that can be found in Bahrain include the Arabian hare, the desert hedgehog, the long-eared hedgehog, and the Indian grey mongoose.
- There are also bats in Bahrain.
- Some of the species of bats that can be seen in Bahrain include the trident bat, the naked-rumped tomb bat, the Kuhl’s pipistrelle, and the Rüppell’s pipistrelle.
- The Hawar Islands is home to different species of birds and was designated as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area by BirdLife International, an organization composed of different organizations that aim to conserve birds and their habitats.
- Some of the bird species include the western reef heron, Socotra cormorant, white-cheeked tern, Saunders’s tern, and the Sooty falcon.
- The sea around the islands of the Bahrain archipelago has extensive areas of seagrass and algae and is home to different marine life, including sea turtles and dugongs.
GOVERNORATES
- Bahrain is divided into four governorates: (1) Capital, (2) Northern,
- (3) Southern, and (4) Muharraq.
- Each governorate is headed by a governor, who is appointed by the prime minister.
- The yellow-colored part is where the Capital
- governorate is located.
- The darker yellow-colored part is where the Muharraq governorate is located.
- The blue-colored part is where the Northern governorate is located.
- The pink-colored parts are considered the Southern governorate.
- The Capital governorate includes Manama.
- The Muharraq governorate is home to some
- of the oldest residential properties of Bahrain.
- The Northern governorate is home to The Japanese School in Bahrain.
- The Southern governorate has the largest land area among the four governorates of Bahrain.
ECONOMY
- Bahrain’s main import is crude petroleum from the underwater pipeline in Saudi Arabia. It goes through different processes and becomes one of the primary exports of Bahrain – refined petroleum products.
- Bahrain also imports machinery, food, and chemicals.
- Bahrain also exports aluminum goods.
