Guilin is a city in southern China situated on the west bank of the Li River and borders Hunan to the north. Guilin is known for its dramatic landscapes of limestone karst hills. The city has long been renowned for its scenery of karst topography.

ETYMOLOGY
- The name Guilin means “Forest of Sweet Osmanthus”, owing to the large number of fragrant sweet osmanthus trees located in the region.
- It is derived from cassia tree called “Guihuashu” in Chinese.
DESCRIPTION
- Guilin is often associated with the epithet “By water, by mountains, most lovely, Guilin”.
- Guilin is a world-famous scenic city for its unrivalled karst landscape, exquisite mountains, limpid rivers, wired caves, and beautiful rocks.
- Besides the unparalleled scenery, the city also boasts its time-honored history.
- At its center, there are twin pagodas called the Two Rivers and Four Lakes, the Sun and Moon. Formed by two rivers (Li River and Peach Blossom River) and four lakes including Fir Lake (Shahu), Banyan Lake (Ronghu), Guihu Lake (Osmanthus Lake) and the newly dug Wood Dragon Lake (Mulong Lake), it is the largest project scale in the history of Guilin.
HISTORY
- 10,000 years ago, it was the time of the Zengpiyan People that were in the matriarchal clan society.
- Before the Qin dynasty, Guilin region was settled by the Baiyue people.
- During 221–206 BC (the Qin dynasty), the first Emperor set up the Guilin Shire in this region. On the other hand, due to the construction of the Ling Canal, this place became one of the gateways between the Central Plains and the Lingnan Region (current Guangdong, Guangxi and part Hunan, Jiangxi).
- Later, in 111 BC, during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty, Shi’an County was established, which could be regarded as the beginning of the city.
- In AD 507, the town was renamed Guizhou.
- During 220-280, the tumultuous Three Kingdom Period, Shian was governed by the Shu State and the Wu State successively. To gradually develop the city into a political center.
- In 618-907, (the Tang Dynasty), Shian was renamed Lingui County and built to be an impressive southern prefecture.
- Until the time of the Song Dynasty in 960-1127, the territory of this region was extended to the current Hainan Island.
- During the time of Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, the important position of the Guilin region both in economy and politics was unshakable.
- 1940, Guilin City was established. In 1950, the provincial capital of Guangxi was moved from Guilin to Nanning.
- In 1981, Guilin was listed where the protection of historical and cultural heritage, as well as natural scenery, should be treated as a priority project by the State Council as one of the four cities (the other three being Beijing, Hangzhou, and Suzhou).
CLIMATE
- The weather in this region is conditionally under the control of the tropical monsoon, which is considered to be of seasons distinct, pleasant temperature, and abundant rainfall. Guilin people describe the climate with this proverb “Scarcely snowing in winter, perennially flowers blossoming”.
BEST PLACES TO VISIT
- Li River –The Li River originates in Mountain Mao’er at Xing’an County in the northeast of Guilin. Mao’er Mountain is a place of excellent ecological environment that has luxuriant vegetation and fresh air. It winds and meanders for 170 kilometers, passing through Guilin and Yangshuo to the outlet of Gongchen River in Pingle County.
- Elephant Trunk Hill – Guilin Elephant Trunk Hill, also called the Elephant Hill, is the most famous landmark of Guilin city. The whole hill looks like a huge elephant stretching its trunk to drink water from the Li River. It is the masterpiece of karst landscape, made of pure limestone deposited on the seabed 360 million years ago.
- Longji Rice Terraces –Longji Rice Terraces are outstretched from Guilin by mountain roads amid spectacular scenery. Longji Rice Terrace is being used for growing premium quality rice by Yao and Zhuang villagers. This ingenious construction makes best use of the scarce arable land and water resources in the mountainous area.
- Reed Flute Cave – Is a famous attraction which generally providing a magical fairyland of stalagmites, stone columns, curtains, stalactites and flowers in diverse amazing shapes and colors while appreciating landscape and rural scenery.
