LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes. They will be able to identify common attributes of a group of shapes and describe, compare, and name 2-D shapes.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:
- When teaching distinguishing attributes, try the following:
- Itβs important for students to be able to think through their ideas. They donβt have to be correct immediately, but they need to be able to reason and then adjust.
- The big idea for this lesson is to prove it!
- Facilitate with questions rather than giving answers, e.g., What shape is this? How are you sure that is the shape? What sentence could I write to prove it? How are you sure this is a rectangle, not a square?
THEORY:

- Through guidance with the rules, they will then be able to adjust their ideas until they reach a correct answer.
CAN YOU FIGURE OUT THE RULE?
- Look at the shapes in the circle. Theyβre all different shapes, but what do they all have in common? Why do you think the shapes outside the circle canβt go in?
- Answer: The rule is that only shapes with straight sides can go in the circle. The shapes outside of the circle have curved lines.
