LEARNING OBJECTIVE
- At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to solve for the area of rectangles by multiplication and addition. The student will also be able to look for missing sides when an area is given. The student will also be able to compare two rectangles of different areas and solve related word problems.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When teaching Finding Area using Multiplication and Addition, take note of the following:
- Aid the student in transitioning from counting unit squares to multiplying sides to find the area.
- Remind the student that multiplication is just like adding the same number over and over.
THEORY
- In previous lessons, we learned that you could find a figure’s area by counting the number of unit squares that fit inside it. By counting the number of square units inside the figure below, we know that its area is 12 square units.
- We can also look at this another way. If we count the top row of the figure, we see that there are 4 square units.
- We also notice that there are three rows of four units. Therefore, we can understand this figure’s area as 4 + 4 + 4, or 3 x 4. We can also look at this figure as 4 columns of 3 unit squares. This would then translate as 3 + 3 + 3 + 3, or 4 x 3. As you can see, all of these expressions are still equal to the area we found before by counting 12 unit squares.
- We can find the area of rectangles by multiplying the measures of its sides. We can also think of it as adding rows or columns of unit squares a certain number of times.
