Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of this module, students will be able to solve real-world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:
- When dealing with word problems, take note of the following:
- List down the given quantities
- Always ask, “what are we looking for?”
- If it helps, try drawing and visualizing the scenario
THEORY:
- When dealing with word problems, try to follow the following steps:
- List down the given numbers. Always write down the units.
- Ask yourself, “What are we solving for?”
- Plan: How am I going to solve this problem?
- What techniques am I going to use?
- Using your desired plan, solve for the final answer
- Verify if your answer is correct by trying another technique
- Ask yourself, “Does my final answer make sense?”
- Usually, when we see the word “of,” we can replace this with the multiplication sign “x.” For example, when we see 1/2 of 5/6, of cookies were eaten. We can treat this as 1/2 x 5/6 which will give us 5/12. Meaning 5/12 of the total cookies was eaten. For these word problems, recall how to multiply fractions with proper and improper fractions, mixed numbers, and whole numbers.
- Technique 1: Using Bar Models
- Take, for example, 1/2 x 3/4. We start by drawing the bar model for one fraction, then drawing the other fraction’s bar model on top of the first fraction’s bar model. The orange segment is the intersection of the fractions and is also the product. This is illustrated below:
- Technique 2: Using Number Lines
- Take, for example, 1/3 x 5. Recall that when we multiply, we move to the right of the number line starting from zero. 1/3 x 5 is illustrated as follows:
