Counting on a specific number of times to a number identifies the number where we end counting. There are different techniques to count on to add/subtract.
See the fact file below for more information on the count on to add/subtract or alternatively, you can download our 26-page Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Count On to Add/Subtract CCSS 1.OA.5 worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
- At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to understand that counting whole numbers can be a method to find the sum or the difference.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When counting on to add or subtract, take note of the following:
- Recall counting whole numbers from 0 by counting by 1
- Make use of your fingers to visually count by the numbers
- Remember that the value added to the number is the number of times you count
- Use a number line or dots to help the student count
THEORY
- Counting on a specific number of times to a number identifies the number where we end counting.
- For example, from 4, if we count on 3 times forward, we can count from 4 then 5, 6 and end at 7. Therefore, 4 + 3 can be solved by counting up 1 number higher three times.
- Likewise, from 6, if we count on 2 times backward, we can count from 6 then 5, and end at 4. Therefore, 6 – 2 can be solved by counting down 1 number lower two times.
- There are different techniques to count on.
- Using your fingers
- To do this technique, represent the first number through your fingers. Then, put your other fingers up when adding or put your current fingers down when subtracting.
- Counting visually through dots or other illustrations
- Count how many representative illustrations there can be after the initial number by counting visually.
- 2 dots + 3 dots = 5 dots
- Using a number line
- Imagine the number hopping from the initial number to the next number until it ends with the right answer.
- Count back 1 time from 5:
