DEFINITION
- The perimeter of a shape is the distance or length that goes around it.
- To find the perimeter of a shape, you have to do two things:
- Start by knowing the length of each side.
- Add the lengths of all the sides.
UNITS OF LENGTH
- When measuring objects in the real world, always include a unit of length, so people will know the actual length of an object.
- Miles and kilometers are used for really long distances.
- Inches and centimeters are used for smaller objects.
- Meters and feet are used for medium-sized spaces and objects.
- It’s very important to use the correct unit of length when finding the perimeter. Say for example, you need to build a fence around your pool. When you measure its sides, you use only one unit of length.
- When you know the unit of length for the perimeter, you know how many materials to get for building the fence.
- To find the perimeter of a shape, add the lengths of all the sides.
- 10 + 15 + 10 + 15 = 50
- The perimeter of the swimming pool is 50 meters or 50 m.
- Here’s another example. Pretend you’re baking and you’re using a square baking pan. Find its perimeter.
- Given that the pan is a square, and we all know that a square has 4 equal sides, thus, the length of one side is same as the length of all the other three sides.
- Since one side is 8 inches long, we can assume that the other sides are also 8 inches long.
- Since we’re adding the same number 4 times, we can just multiply the length of one side by the total number of sides.
- Therefore, the perimeter of the baking pan is 32 inches or 32 in.
- PERIMETER OF A RECTANGLE
- PERIMETER = length + width + length + width
or
PERIMETER = (2 x length ) + (2 x width)
- PERIMETER = length + width + length + width
- PERIMETER OF A SQUARE
- PERIMETER = length + length + length + length
or
PERIMETER = 4 x length
- PERIMETER = length + length + length + length
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AREAS AND PERIMETERS
- Perimeter and area are two different things. How are they related?
- Perimeter is the length or distance around a shape or space.
- To find the perimeter, simply add the lengths of all the sides.
- Area is the space taken up by a flat shape.
- To find the area, multiply its width by its height.
