EARLY LIFE
- Charles III, the first child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born on November 14, 1948, at Buckingham Palace, during George VI, his grandfather’s reign.
- He has three more siblings, Princess Anne, Princes Andrew, and Edward.
- When his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, became the queen, Charles III immediately became the heir apparent at age 4.
- He automatically assumed the titles Duke of Cornwall and, in Scottish ranks – Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Lord of the Isles, Prince and Great Steward of Scotland, and Baron of Renfrew.
- He was baptized on December 15, 1948, in Buckingham Palace’s music room by Geoffrey Fisher, the Archbishop of Canterbury.
- Charles Philip Arthur George was the name given to him.
- At the age of 5, Catherine Peebles, a governess, was tasked to oversee the education of Charles III at Buckingham Palace.
- Unlike other heirs apparent, Prince Charles attended a regular school, Hill House School in West London.
- Charles III never received preferential treatment from the school’s headmaster.
- He even suggested that Charles III should train in football.
- Charles III also attended Cheam Preparatory School in Hampshire, England, and Gordonstoun in the northeast of Scotland, which were also two former schools of his father.
- According to Charles’s 1994 biography by Jonathan Dimbleby, although he was forced by his father to attend Gordonstoun and was bullied there, he said that he was glad to have attended Gordonstoun as he learned a lot about himself, accepted challenges, and learned to lead.
- In 1966, he spent two terms in Victoria, Australia, where the Timbertop campus of Geelong Grammar School was located.
- In 1973, he stated that the time he spent in Timbertop was the most fun he had in his student life.
- He returned to Gordonstoun and became a head boy, a student leadership role in schools that represented the school’s entire student body.
- When he received his A-levels in History and French, he proceeded to university instead of the tradition that they must attend the British Armed Forces.
- He got to Trinity College, Cambridge October 1967, where he studied anthropology and archaeology in the first part of the Tripos and switched to History for the second part.
- In his second year, Prince Charles learned Welsh history and language for one term at the University College of Wales in Aberystwyth.
- In 1970, he was the first heir apparent to have a university degree.
- On July 26, 1958, Prince Charles was already Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester.
- However, it was only on July 1, 1969, that the Queen crowned him.
- Prince Charles offered his service to the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy.
- He was a qualified pilot and diver.
RELATIONSHIPS AND MARRIAGE
- As a prince, Charles was linked to numerous women.
- His past girlfriends were Georgiana Russell, Davina Sheffield, Lady Sarah Spencer, Lady Jane Wellesley, and Camilla Shand.
- Lord Mountbatten, his great-uncle, talked about a potential marriage with Amanda Knatchbull, his granddaughter.
- The 25-year-old Prince Charles wrote to Amanda’s mother and his godmother, Lady Brabourne, about his interest in her daughter.
- Lady Brabourne approved; however, she thought her daughter was too young as she was just 16.
- After four years, Lord Mountbatten, with Amanda, was supposed to accompany Prince Charles on his India trip.
- However, their fathers, Lord Brabourne, and Prince Philip, disagreed.
- When Prince Charles was about to leave alone for India, the Irish Republican Army assassinated Lord Mountbatten.
- Prince Charles returned from his visit and proposed to Amanda.
- During that time, Amanda’s grandmother and youngest brother died in a bomb attack, making her hesitant to join the royal family.
- In 1977, Prince Charles first met Lady Diana Spencer when he first visited Althorp, her home.
- At first, he did not consider her romantically, not until mid-1980.
- Prince Charles eventually began thinking of Lady Diana Spencer as a potential bride.
- The couple’s courtship attracted so much attention from the press and paparazzi.
- His father, Philip, told Charles that the media speculation would affect Lady Diana Spencer’s reputation due to his indecisiveness in marrying her and if he wouldn’t realize that Lady Diana was a suitable royal bride based on Mountbatten’s standards.
- In February 1981, Prince Charles proposed to Lady Diana and was officially engaged on February 24, 1981.
- They married on July 29 at St. Paul’s Cathedral and lived at Kensington Palace and Highgrove House.
- The couple had two children, Prince William, born in 1982, and Prince Harry, born in 1984.
- Charles III was the first royal father to be at the birth of his children.
- After five years of marriage, the couple had trouble with their relationship because of incompatibility and a 13-year age gap.
- Lady Diana admitted that she was in love with someone working in the same environment, and it was assumed to be Barry Mannakee.
- Barry was transferred to the Diplomatic Protection Squad when his managers knew of his relationship with Lady Diana.
- Lady Diana started a relationship with the family’s former riding instructor, James Hewitt, while Charles III also resumed his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

- The couple’s legal separation was announced in December 1992 by John Major.
- They finally divorced on August 28, 1996, after the Queen’s advice to end their marriage.

- On August 31, 1997, the news that Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris shocked the world.

- His parents missed his wedding because the Queen was the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, but they did attend the service of blessing and reception at Windsor Castle.

- From 2002 to 2022, Charles completed 10,934 engagements.
- On behalf of the Queen, Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, took official duties.
- Some of his duties included attending funerals of foreign dignitaries, officiating in investitures, and attending several events to represent the Queen.
- He also made tours in Wales and attended important national occasions.
- Prince Charles attended independence celebrations as the Queen’s representative in places such as Fiji, Bahamas, Papua New Guinea, Zimbabwe, and Brunei.
- In 1983, Christopher John Lewis, who had attempted to assassinate the Queen, tried to escape the psychiatric hospital to kill Charles.
- In January 1994, to show his protest on the treatment of the Cambodian asylum seekers detained in detention camps, a man identified as David Kang used a starting pistol to fire two shots at Prince Charles.
- In May 2015, the first joint trip of Prince Charles and Camilla to the Republic of Ireland was a significant step in promoting peace and reconciliation by the British Embassy.
- During the 2018 meeting of the Commonwealth heads of government, they decided to make Prince Charles the next Head of the Commonwealth after the Queen.
- In 2019, Prince Charles and Camilla were the first British royals to visit Cuba to create a closer relationship between UK and Cuba.
- He attended the State Opening of Parliament in May 2022 to deliver the Queen’s speech on her behalf.
