BIOGRAPHY
- Eugenie Bouchard was born in Montreal, Quebec on February 25, 1994. She is a child of Michel Bouchard and Julie Leclair. Eugenie has a twin sister Beatrice and two younger siblings, Charlotte and William Bouchard.
- Bouchard grew up in the Westmount neighborhood of Montreal. They also lived on the same street as former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.
- Eugenie and Beatrice started taking tennis lessons as early as the age of five. Eugenie got very interested in the sport. On the other hand, her twin sister quit within a year.
- In the Nun’s Island Tennis Center located in Verdun, Quebec, Bouchard began her training with coach Zdenek Bukal when she was six years old. For her academics, Bouchard attended the Westmount private girls’ school called “The Study.” She stated that math and science were her toughest classes.
EARLY YEARS
- Bouchard was known to have a competitive characteristic. She was very disciplined and committed to her sport and studies. At the age of nine, Bouchard competed at the Open Super 12 tennis tournament in Auray, France, in 2004.
- Bouchard was able to join the tournament when she won an event in Montreal. Laura Robson was her doubles partner for the Open Super 12 tennis tournament.
- Bouchard considered that the 2004 Open 12 tournament made her realize the strengths she had and her yearning to travel the world and play tennis as her career.
- At the age of 11, Bouchard met the Tennis Canada’s National Women’s Team, Sylvain Bruneau. The head coach stated that she was impressed with the maturity and work ethic of Eugenie Bouchard.
BOUCHARD: JUNIOR TENNIS CAREER
- At the age of 12, Bouchard, together with her family, moved to Florida. This decision was for the benefit of Eugenie, for her to be able to train at the High-Performance Tennis Academy with Nick Saviano.
- In 2007, Bouchard was named as the Tennis Quebec’s Female Junior Player of the Year. She also enjoyed her full-time training in Florida and played for several events in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior events.
- Bouchard won the 2007 Prince Cup International Girls’ Junior Doubles Title with Robson as well as the 2008 Costa Rica Bowl, where Bouchard won over the future Olympic Gold Medalist, Monica Puig.
- Bouchard also won the 2008 All-Canadian Junior Championship and defeated Dominique Harmath of Toronto. In the following year, Bouchard returned to Montreal and trained at the Tennis Canada National Training Center. Her coach, Nick Saviano, led her.
- In 2010, Bouchard won over Ulrikke Eikeri of Norway at the ITF Women’s Junior Singles Tournament at the Uruguay Bowl. Additionally, Bouchard also partnered with Eikeri to win the Uruguay Bowl Junior Girls’ Doubles title.
SUCCESS OF THE JUNIOR AND PROFESSIONAL CIRCUITS
- Bouchard was able to get her first victory on the ITF Professional Circuits and the WTA Tour in 2011.
- On the other hand, on the Junior Circuits, Bouchard achieved several victories in the Girls’ Singles Tournament at the Copa Gerdau in Brazil. She also won the Canadian Open Junior Championship in Quebec.
- During the Junior’s Doubles, Bouchard was teamed up with Grace Min defeating Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands and Hao Chen Tang of China in the finals.
- Bouchard achieved two victories on the ITF Professional Circuit in 2011. On February 5, Bouchard had a victory against Saisai Zheng of China with a score of 6-4, 6-3 in Australia.
- At the WTA Tour in 2011 of the Citi Open in Maryland, Bouchard won her first career match, defeating Alison Riske in the first round.
JUNIOR WIMBLEDON SINGLES’ CHAMPION
- At the 2012 AEGON Junior International, Bouchard defeated Carol Zhao and achieved her first junior tournament victory. She also partnered up with Taylor Townsend and won the Junior Doubles title.
- Bouchard and Townsend also played at Wimbledon 2012, achieving Bouchard’s second consecutive victory in Wimbledon’s doubles championship.
- More importantly, Bouchard’s victory against Elina Svitolina in the Wimbledon Singles Girl’s Tournament made her the first-ever Canadian win a grand slam singles’ title at any level.
- Bouchard made her appearance in the quarterfinals of the WTA Tour of the Citi Open. She recorded her first-ever win at the Rogers Cup, with a victory against Shahar Peer of Israel.
- Bouchard was named the Tennis Quebec’s Top Athlete at the end of the season and her first of four consecutive years to win the award.
BOUCHARD: WTA NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
- At the 2013 WTA Tour, Bouchard played full-time. Bouchard’s highlight of the season was in October when she made her appearance in the Japan Open’s final in Osaka.
- Bouchard also moved from the 144th place to the 32nd place in the WTA World Rankings. Bouchard was named as the WTA Newcomer of the Year and received the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award (which is presented to Canada’s top female athlete of the year).
BOUCHARD’S GRAND SLAM AND WTA TITLE
- During the Wimbledon 2014, Bouchard was considered the first Canadian singles tennis player to reach a senior grand slam event’s final. Even though Petra Kvitova defeated Bouchard, she made Canadian sports history on another level.
- Bouchard achieved her victory against Karolina Pliskova with a score of 6-2, 4-6,6-3 in the finals, and achieved her first Women’s Tennis Association title on May 24, 2014.
- Bouchard also received the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award for her second consecutive win.
THE MOST MARKETABLE ATHLETE IN THE WORLD
- In December 2014, Bouchard signed a one-year contract with WME-IMG (a sports management firm) and became a client of IMG Models that led to sponsorship agreements with Nike, Beast headphones, Rolex watch, and Aviva Insurance.
- Bouchard also made deals with Coca-Cola Canada, Babolat Tennis Racquets, and many more. Lastly, in 2015, the SportsPro Magazine named her as the Most Marketable Athlete in the world.
