LEARNING OBJECTIVE

  • At the end of the lesson, students will be able to evaluate expressions with the addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than 20.

A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER

  • When teaching addition within 20, keep in mind the following:
    • Remind the student that they may use any strategy they feel comfortable with.
    • They may either group any of the addends before adding the third or add from left to right.

THEORY

  • Addition word problems show an increase in something, or the combination of different parts to create a whole. Some keywords that show addition in a word problem include add, receive, more, increase, and the like.
  • In the previous lesson, we learned that each word problem could be translated into a mathematical operation.
  • However, what would it look like if there were three addends?
  • When solving a problem with three addends, we add the first two together, then add the third one to the first sum.
  • For example, 6+3+3=__

  • First, we add the first two addends. 6+3 is 9. Then, we add 9+3, which is 12.
  • How would we do it if we had a word problem? Let’s say that Nancy has 5 toys. On her birthday, her mom gives her 2 toys, while her dad gives her 4 toys.
  • How many toys does Nancy have in total?

  • First, we add her initial amount of toys, 5, to the 2 toys that her mom gave her. 5+2=7. Then, we add the toys that her dad gave her, so 7+4=11.
