- Many of the United Empire Loyalists residing in America during the American Revolution fled to Canada to escape prosecution and to stay loyal to the monarchy.
- Many United Empire Loyalist descendants are still living in Canada and are able to trace back their ancestry.
- The United Empire Loyalists were encouraged to move to Canada by the British monarchy. Up[on their arrival to Canada the British Monarchy offered the Royal Empire Loyalists incentives such as land and money.
- Many of the United Empire Loyalists residing in America during the American Revolution were subject to persecution or death.
HISTORY OF THE UNITED EMPIRE LOYALISTS
- The term “United Empire Loyalist” was founded by the governor Lord Dorchester in 1789, to recognize citizens who stayed loyal to the British after the American Revolutionary War.
- The majority of United Empire Loyalists moved to British North America (now known as Canada).
- United Empire Loyalists were against the American Revolutionary War as they continued to support the British King.
- Those who actively fought against the American Revolutionary War were called “Tories”.
- Many United Empire Loyalists decided to migrate to Canada to escape violence they had faced during the American Revolutionary War.
- Other United Empire Loyalists were motivated to move because the British government was offering free land.
- On May 18, 1793, the first of the United Empire Loyalists arrived in British North America.
- The majority of United Empire Loyalists came to British North America from New York.
- The arrival of the United Empire Loyalists changed British North America from a French speaking colony into an English speaking colony with the exception of the French speaking area which is now known as the province of Quebec.
- Many Iroquois First Nations supported the British and were forced to leave New York and other states.

- The United Empire Loyalists who migrated to Canada were of multiple ethnicities, races, and religions.
- The different nationalities of United Empire Loyalists included English, German, Swiss, French, Irish, Scottish, Italian, and American.
- United Empire Loyalists practiced a variety of different religions including Roman Catholic, Mennonite, Quaker, Lutheran, Judaism, and Anglican.
- Some occupations held by United Empire Loyalists were merchants, butchers, soldiers, farmers, blacksmiths, and shopkeepers.
- Many United Empire Loyalists felt a connection to Britain, their “mother country”.
- There was fear among United Empire Loyalists that an American Revolution would bring anarchy to the country.
- United Empire Loyalists were not rich or poor, they did not belong to a high social rank. They were “ordinary” people.
CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
- There are 4-6 million Canadians living today who are descendants of United Empire Loyalists.
- When the United Empire Loyalists left America they took with them the “Union Flag” to symbolize and remember its historical connection.
- The large migration of United Empire Loyalists into British North America helped establish the English language spoken today.
- United Empire Loyalists influenced an evolutionary government rather than a revolutionary one.
