INTRODUCTION
- Moldova is formally known as the Republic of Moldova.
- Moldova was formerly known as Bessarabia and was an integral part of the Romanian principality of Moldavia until 1812.
- Until the end of World War I, Bessarabia remained as a province of the Russian Empire which started after it was ceded to Russia by the sultan of the Ottoman Empire.
- After the World War I, Bessarabia became a part of Greater Romania but returned back under the control of the Russian Empire from 1940 until 1941.
- When the Soviet Union collapsed in August 1991, Bessarabia declared its independence and took on the name of Moldova.
- Moldova became a part of the United Nations in 1992.
- With its independence, Moldova faced several problematic situations.
- First, Moldova had to establish an effective state despite the fact that no self-government or sovereignty had existed before.
- Second, it became hard for Moldova to establish a constitution and to find political leaders that were not involved in the Soviet Union.
- Third, the transition of Moldova to a free market economy from a controlled economy became hard due to the fact that the majority of the agricultural economy was developed under Soviet rule.
GEOGRAPHY
- Moldova is bordered to the north, east, and south by Ukraine, and to the west by Romania.
- A large portion of Moldova lies between the rivers of Prut and Dniester.
- The soils of Moldova are highly fertile.
- Chernozem, or rich black soils, cover around three-fourths of the land of Moldova.
- Due to their highly fertile soil, grain, tobacco, and sugar beets can be found in the north.
- Although the quality of soil diminishes southward, there are still grapes and sunflowers that can be found growing in this area.
- Moldova is divided into districts (32), municipalities (3), and autonomous regions (2).
- Moldova has 66 cities or towns, and 916 communes.
- The 32 districts of Moldova include Anenii Noi, Basarabeasca, Briceni, Cahul, Cantemir, Călărași, Căușeni, Cimișlia, Criuleni, Dondușeni, Drochia, Dubăsari, Edineț, Fălești, Florești, Glodeni, Hîncești, Ialoveni, Leova, Nisporeni, Ocnița, Orhei, Rezina, Rîșcani, Sîngerei, Soroca, Strășeni, Șoldănești, Ștefan Vodă, Taraclia, Telenești, and Ungheni.
- The 3 municipalities include Chișinău, Bălți, and Bender.
- Chișinău is the largest city in Moldova and is also the capital city.
- In terms of population, Chișinău is closely followed by Bălți, Tiraspol, and Bender.
- Moldova’s climate is moderately continental, due to its close distance from the Black Sea. Moldova experiences a climate that is mildly cold in the autumn and winter and a bit cool in the spring and summer.
BIODIVERSITY
- The northern and central parts of Moldova are forest zones.
- Around 1,500 plant species can be found in Moldova.
- Most common plant species that can be found in Moldova include hornbeam, oak, linden, maple, wild pear, and wild cherry.
- Moldova’s animal life is rich despite the small size of the country.
- Mammals that can be found in Moldova include wild boar, wolves, badgers, wildcats, ermines, martins, polecats, roe deer, hare, foxes, and muskrat.
- There are also several bird species that can be found in Moldova, which include wood lark, jay, song thrush, blackbird, hawk, and long-eared owl.

- Moldova imports most of its energy resources from Russia and Ukraine due to the few natural resources of the country.
- Moldova has a well-established wine industry. In 2014, Moldova was known was the 20th largest wine producing country in the world.
