GENERAL FACTS
- Saint Kitts and Nevis are made up of two small islands in the Caribbean Sea both representing one country, the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
- Saint Kitts and Nevis is about 1/3 of the way from Puerto Rico to Trinidad and Tobago.
- The country is an independent commonwealth realm, with Elizabeth II as Queen and head of state. The politics of Saint Kitts and Nevis takes place in the framework of federal parliamentary democracy, making them the only federation in the Caribbean.
- Saint Kitts and Nevis borders the Caribbean Sea on the west side and the Atlantic Ocean on the eastern coast faces.
- 27 km, or 16.7 miles, is the distance between Saint Kitts and Nevis.
HISTORY
- Saint Kitts and Nevis is a two-island country nation located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
- They were inhabited by the Carib people when Christopher Columbus first discovered the islands in 1493 on his second voyage to the New World.
- The island that is known today as Saint Kitts was originally called βLiamuiga,β which means βFertile Islandβ by the Caribs, however, Christopher Columbus renamed it to St Christopher, after his patron saint.
- The English were the first settlers and renamed it Saint Kitts when they settled there in 1623, under Sir Thomas Warner. In 1628, they also established a colony on Nevis.
- Same to the many islands in the region, their economy was fueled by sugar and enslaved Africans who worked on the plantations.
- The French also settled on Saint Kitts in 1627, which caused a bitter rivalry that would last for well over a hundred years.
- At Brimstone Hill in 1782, the British had a decisive victory over the French. Now, the two islands were under permanent British control.
- Great Britain combined Saint Kitts, Nevis, and the island of Anguilla in 1882 into one colony. in 1971, Anguilla broke away.
- Saint Kitts and Nevis became an independent country in 1983, on condition that they stay a country of the commonwealth, with Elizabeth II as Queen and head of state.
- Currently, most of the inhabitants on both islands are the African slave descendants.
GEOGRAPHY
- The country has two main islands, Saint Kitts and Nevis, including a smaller island named Booby Island that has no inhabitants.
- Mount Liamuiga is the highest peak at 1,156 meters.
- Saint Kitts and Nevis’ terrain is volcanic with mountainous interiors.
- People do not reside on the steeper slopes leading to these peaks. Most of the people on both islands live nearer to the sea. There are several rivers coming from the mountains of both islands that give fresh water to the people.
- There is also one small lake in Saint Kitts.
- Saint Kitts and Nevis’ climate is hot and humid all year round. The country has seawater temperatures of 20Β° C or 79Β° F.
- The capital city is Basseterre, which is located on the main island of Saint Kitts.
DEMOGRAPHICS
- The people living on Saint Kitts are called Kittitian(s), and those living on Nevis are called Nevisian(s).
- As of 2020, the current population of Saint Kitts and Nevis based on the latest United Nations estimates is 53,302.
- Approximately 75% of the population lives in Saint Kitts, where 15,500 of these living in the capital, Basseterre. Other large settlements include Cayon and Sandy Point Town which are both on Saint Kitts and Gingerland and Charlestown which are both on Nevis.
- The official language of the country is English. Saint Kitts Creole is also commonly spoken.
- The major religion is Christianity, mainly Anglicans and other Protestants denominations, with a smaller population of Catholics.
CULTURE
- The country of Saint Kitts and Nevis is known for a number of musical celebrations including Carnival which is celebrated from December 18 to January 3 on Saint Kitts.
- The Saint Kitts Music Festival is featured during the last week of June while the week-long Culturama on Nevis lasts from the end of July into early August.
- Cricket is a popular sport in Saint Kitts and Nevis.
- The late Runako Morton was from Nevis.
- The smallest country to host the 2007 Cricket World Cup matches was Saint Kitts and Nevis.
- Saint Kitts is home to an abundance of incredible golf courses and has its very own modern stadium, Warner Park, which gets packed on big sporting occasions, such as the West Indies cricketers when they play there.
