I say “mathematics”, you say “numbers, addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions”. Some kids love it, others hate it. But if we described math as not just a language of numbers but the language of ideas, surely this would rouse your curiosity?
That’s what math has done for thousands of years: piqued the interest of many great mathematicians such as Archimedes, Pythagoras, Isaac Newton, Einstein, Alan Turing, John Venn, Joseph Fourier, Johannes Kepler, Galileo Galilei, Steven Hawking and more.
Math consists of powerful vocabulary in much the same way that spoken or written language does. By having the words to describe something you’re able to form more complex thoughts about it. Similarly, the language of math has allowed us to progress from simple quantity addition and subtraction (how many sheep do I have? How many sheep do I have after the wolf came?), multiplication and division (how many sheep do I have after spring and how many will I have if I give my son half the flock?) into highly complex understanding of physics and the laws of physics, chemistry, computer science and more all in the search for understanding the universe and our place in it.
On the topic of the universe, math has a beautiful unifying quality. It doesn’t matter what language you speak, your country, religion or culture, the language of math is universal. From the simplest math to the most sophisticated, the principles of math remain the same everywhere in the world whether you’re working out Algebra, Geometry, Calculus or Statistics in English, Chinese or Arabic.
Through math, we’ve been able to construct pyramids, aqueducts, temples and skyscrapers, build and restore economies, develop medicine and technology, explain numbers infinitesimally large and small, predict nature and model phenomena previously in the realm of mystery.
What makes a great mathematician is the ability to seek out, identify and use patterns to create or prove ideas and to accept that an idea might not be true when the math doesn’t check out. A great mathematician also knows that their knowledge is built on firm foundations and that, just like language, it’s necessary to understand the basics and practice them before moving on to the next level.
