EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
- During the reign of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Harry was born on September 15, 1984, in the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, as the second child of the Prince of Wales (now King Charles III) and his first wife, Diana, Princess of Wales.
- He was called “Harry” by family, friends, and the general public as a child. William and Harry were raised in Highgrove House in Gloucestershire and Kensington Palace in London.
- In comparison to earlier royal children, Diana wanted him and his brother to have a wider variety of experiences and a deeper grasp of everyday life.
- She took them to places like McDonald’s, Walt Disney World, AIDS clinics, and homeless shelters, among other places.
- From an early age, he traveled with his parents on business trips; in 1985, they made their first trip to Italy. In 1991 and 1998, he also went to Canada with his family.
- In 1996, Harry’s parents divorced. The next year, his mother died in a motor vehicle accident in Paris.
- He was accepted at Eton College after completing the entrance tests. In the past, the Mountbatten-Windsors had sent their children to Gordonstoun, where Harry’s grandfather, father, two uncles, and two cousins had all studied; the choice to send Harry to Eton broke that tradition.
- Harry did, however, continue in the family’s and the Spencers’ footsteps because both Diana’s father and brother went to Eton.
MILITARY CAREER
- Harry attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for his officer training. He completed his training to become a troop leader before being commissioned as a cornet into the Blues and Royals, where he temporarily served alongside his brother William.
- He spent more than 10 weeks in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province in 2007–2008. In 2012–2013, he went back to Afghanistan for a 20-week Army Air Corps mission.
- In 2014, Harry founded the Invictus Games and continues to serve as its patron.
- Since his uncle, Prince Andrew piloted helicopters during the Falklands War, Harry is the first member of the British royal family to serve in a combat zone.
- At the Combermere Barracks in May 2008, Harry received an Operational Service Medal for Afghanistan from his aunt, Princess Anne.
- Harry referred to his ten years in the army (2005–2015) as “the happiest times in my life” in 2021. He has maintained a tight connection to the military since he left the army through the Invictus Games, honorary military postings, and other public activities.
- An agreement for Harry to “step back from Royal duties, including official military appointments” was made, according to a statement released by Buckingham Palace on January 18, 2020.
- In February 2021, the Palace said the Duke would resign from his position as Captain General Royal Marines and return all other honorary military appointments.
