Armenia is officially known as the Republic of Armenia. It is a country that is surrounded by land, and it is located in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia, or the land comprising the continental area of all Europe and Asia. Armenia is a Western Asian country, with Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran to the south.

- Armenia is found in the Transcaucasus or South Caucasus region, located in the Southern Caucasus Mountains.

- Armenia is a landlocked country; a country not surrounded by any major oceans.
- Armenia is being bordered by Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, Iran to the south, and Turkey borders the southwest and east of Armenia.

- There are an estimated 6 to 8 million Armenians in the world.

- The ethnic groups related to Armenians are the Hemshin, Cherkesogai, Hayhurum, Armeno-Tats, and Hidden Armenians.
- The Armenian language, which is Armenia’s official language, is an Indo-European language.
- It is the only language in the Armenian branch.
- It is also used in the de facto Republic of Artsakh.
- The Armenian language is widely used in the Armenian Highlands, the plateaus that make up most of the northern section of Western Asia.
- The Armenian language has its own alphabet that was introduced in 405 AD by Mesrop Mashtots, an early medieval Armenian linguist.
ETYMOLOGY
- The original or traditional name for Armenia was Hayk’ (Հայք), but this is now rarely used.
- Hayk or Hayk The Great was Armenia’s legendary patriarch who also founded the nation.
- Hayk’s story was told in the book, History of Armenia (Պատմություն Հայոց), which was written by Moses of Chorene in the 5th Century.
- Hayastan (Հայաստան) was Armenia’s contemporary name. The usage became popular in the Middle Ages. The Persian suffix “-stan”, which means “place”, was simply added.
- The roots of the name Armenia can be traced to a Behistun inscription written in Old Persian in 515 BC. The country was referred to as Armina.
- Hecataeus of Miletus was the first to use Armeniá, and he referred to the people living in it as Arménioi in the 5th century.
- Armenia was also traced, according to Moses of Chorene and Michael Chamchian, to the name of Aram, a descendant of Hayk.
HISTORY
- The Kingdom of Urartu was established in 860 BC.
- It was an Iron Age Kingdom that was established in the Armenian Highlands.
- The first known king of Urartu was Arame or Aramu.
- The Kingdom of Urartu was replaced by the Satrapy of Armenia in the 6th century BC.
- It was a region controlled by the Orontid dynasty, also known as Eruandid or Yervanduni.
- The Orontid dynasty ruled Armenian lands from the 6th century BC until the 2nd century BC.
- This was the first dynasty to rule the ancient Kingdom of Armenia.
- The Kingdom of Armenia was ruled by Tigranes the Great from 95-55 BC, and Armenia expanded during his reign.
- Around the 3rd or 4th century AD, Armenia was the first state in the world to adopt Christianity as its official religion.
- During the 5th century, Armenia was divided by the ruling of the Byzantine and Sasanian empires.
- The Kingdom of Armenia was restored in the 9th century under the rule of the Bagratuni dynasty.
- It was officially known as the Bagratid Kingdom of Armenia.
- The Kingdom of Armenia suffered from war against the Byzantine Empire.
- The Kingdom of Armenia fell apart in 1045. Seljuk Turks invaded Armenia afterwards.
- From the 11th to the 14th century, Cilician Armenia emerged. It started as a principality and later developed into a kingdom.
- Cilician Armenia was located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
- From the 16th to the 19th century, Armenia was divided into Eastern and Western Armenia, as parts of the land were correspondingly ruled by the Ottoman and Iranian empires.
- Eastern Armenia was invaded and ruled by the Russian Empire in the 19th century. Ottoman rule remained in Western Armenia.
- Armenian genocide happened during World War I, causing the death of 1.5 million Armenians.
- The Republic of Armenia was established in 1918 in accordance with the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, which declared all non-Russian countries once ruled by the Russian Empire to be independent.
- Later on, Armenia became a founding member of the Soviet Union.
- In 1991, the Republic of Armenia became independent after the Soviet Union was dissolved.
