- Doha is the capital city and the main financial hub of Qatar, which is located on the Persian Gulf coast in the eastern part of the country.
- Doha is located north of Al Wakrah and south of Al Khor.
- Among the cities in Qatar, Doha has the largest population, which is why it is also known to be Qatar’s fastest-growing city.
- Doha is known to be an important port.
- Doha was founded in the 1820s as a brand of Al Bidda, and it was formally declared as the country’s capital in 1971 upon Qatar’s independence from being a British protectorate.
- According to the Ministry of Municipality and Environment of Doha, the name originated from the Arabic term dohat, which means “roundness.”
BRIEF HISTORY
- Doha was founded in the vicinity of another settlement, Al Bidda, in the 1820s.
- In 1828, Mohammed bin Khamis was involved in a controversy where he was accused of murdering a native of Bahrain, which resulted in the Al Khalifa imprisoning him. This allowed the Al Khalifa to have additional jurisdiction over the town. With this, Al Bidda and Doha became a sanctuary for pirates and outlaws.
- In May 1843, Isa bin Tarif moved to Doha, where he evicted the then-ruling Sudan tribe and placed the Al-Maadeed and Al-Kuwari tribes in positions of power.
- Shortly after Isa bin Tarif’s death in 1847, the Al Thani family moved to Doha. The Al Thani family then took control of the town.
- In 1867, several troops and ships from Bahrain were sent to attack the towns of Al Wakrah and Doha.
- In 1907, Doha accommodated around 350 pearling boats with around 6,300 men. However, that same year, the pearl market collapsed, forcing the country to sell its pearl harvest at half of its value.
- This resulted in the establishment of the country’s first customs house in Doha.
- In 1916, Qatar agreed to be a British protectorate.
- In the country’s history, Doha has always been a commercial port of local significance,
however, bigger ships cannot enter the port due to the shallow water of the bay. - In 1971, Qatar officially declared its independence.
GEOGRAPHY
- Doha is located in the central-eastern part of Qatar and is bordered by the Persian Gulf on its coast.
- Qatar, officially known as the State of Qatar, is a country in West Asia.
- Doha’s climate is classified as a hot desert with long and extremely hot summers and short and mild to warm winters.
ADMINISTRATION
- Doha is divided into more than 60 communities (or districts), some of which include Al Bidda, Al Dafna, Al Ghanim, Al Markhiya, Al Sadd, Al Waab, Bin Mahmoud, and Madinat Khalifa.
- Al Souq is one of the communities in Doha which is considered to be a commercial district. It was named due to its high density of souqs (or markets). This also houses several government establishments, such as the Qatar Central Bank, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the Supreme Council for Economic Affairs and Investment.
- Al Dafna is a seaside community in Doha rapidly evolving into a downtown district.
- Al-Thumama is one of the five (5) sites for the government-sponsored project of developing reservoirs in Qatar.
DEMOGRAPHICS
- The majority of Qatar’s population lives in Doha and its metropolitan area. Most of the population of Doha is composed of emigrants, mainly from Southeast and South Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Philippines, and Bangladesh.
- Other than these Asian countries, Doha is also home to several other expatriates from Europe, North America, South America, and Australia.
- Arabic is the official language in Qatar, with English considered its common second language.
- Due to the large population of emigrants in Doha, other languages are also widely spoken, such as Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali, Tagalog, Spanish, French, and Hindi.
- The majority of the people residing in Doha are Muslims.
INFRASTRUCTURE
- Doha is home to several beautiful landmarks and buildings, including Al Bayt Stadium, the
iconic football stadium that hosted the opening match of the Fédération
Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup Qatar 2022. - One of the most recognized buildings in Qatar is the Burj Doha, also known as the Doha
Tower. This building overlooks the Arabian Gulf. - One of the most notable and eye-catching buildings in Doha is the Eye of Qatar.
- Nicknamed as the Lego Towers, the Marina Twin Towers can also be found in Doha. The
colorful colors of the towers are said to represent the diversity in Qatar. - Other places that can be found in Doha include the Qatar National Library, Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC), and the National Museum of Qatar.
ECONOMY
- Doha is considered to be the economic center of Qatar. The city houses several local and international organizations, including QatarEnergy (which operates all of Qatar’s gas and oil activities) and Qatargas (the world’s largest liquified natural gas company).
- Doha’s economy focuses primarily on Qatar’s revenue coming from the country’s oil and natural gas industries.
- To expand the economy of Qatar to cater to tourism, the Doha International Airport was built in the late 20th century, but this was replaced by the Hamad International Airport in 2014.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
- Doha has standing links with different communities in other countries, including Tunis in Tunisia, Alameda in California, Beijing in China, Sofia in Bulgaria, Astana in Kazakhstan, Ankara in Turkey, Libertador in Venezuela, and Yerevan in Armenia.
- Among these, the link between Doha and Tunis is the longest one, having the relationship between the two since 1994.
CULTURE
- Doha was chosen by the Arab League as the Arab Capital of Culture in 2010.
- In 2008, the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) was opened in Doha and is regarded to be one of the best museums in the region.
- In 2010, in order to facilitate Qatar’s film industry, the Doha Film Institute (DFI) was established.
- Theatrical performances, introduced in Qatar around the mid-20th century, are being held at the Qatar National Theater and the Qatar National Convention Center in Doha.
